when credit report has been damaged by an identity theft.

Take these steps now!

It’s not a matter of if…only a matter of when. Identity theft has been the fastest growing crime in the United States for many years now. We know. We have cleaned up thousands of credit reports for identity theft victims. People become victims at the hands of not only strangers, but friends and family (about one third of the victims we see have had their identities stolen by family members).

Most people discover that their identities have been used to open accounts in very inconvenient times such as when applying for a mortgage loan, an apartment lease or a car loan. It’s embarrassing and aggravating.

How to Stop Being an Identity Theft Victim when your credit report has been damaged.

Get your credit reports from all three credit bureaus.  You can either go to annualcreditreport.com, which is the site to obtain your official credit reports, or go to the credit bureaus directly at:

Experian.com

Transunion.com

Equifax.com

  • Call one of the credit bureaus and inform it that your identity has been stolen.  It will inform the other 2 of the same.
  • Ask for a credit freeze from each of the bureaus.  This means that no creditor can obtain your credit report without the credit bureau contacting  you directly and getting your permission.

Go through each credit report thoroughly and identify every piece of information that does not belong to you.  This includes not only tradelines, but addresses and telephone numbers that have never been yours.

Get a police report.  Some police stations are less cooperative than others.  Do not take “no” for an answer.  Without a police report, the credit bureaus nor the creditors will take your claims seriously.  We need the identity theft police report as an attachment to the dispute letters that we send on your behalf.

Give us the police reports.  We will take it from there at no out of pocket charge to you.  We will right the proper dispute letters to the credit bureaus, disputing the incorrectly reporting information.  If they refuse to remove the fraudulent data from your credit reports, we will file a lawsuit against them, all at no out of pocket charge to you.

We charge you nothing out of pocket to get your credit report corrected.

Under the law, the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, we are entitled to collect our fees and costs from the defendants in successful cases.  We are very good about selecting and preparing cases.  Thus, we collect our fees and costs from the settlements that we obtain from the defendants.  You, too, are entitled to damages from the banks and credit bureaus that improperly refuse to remove fraudulent information from your credit report.

We have removed hundreds of fraudulent items from thousands of credit reports and it has never cost any of our clients anything out of their pockets.  We can help you, too.
